A very unique
project on Lake Charlevoix that is a summer destination for a
family from the southern U.S.
This was a
design collaboration with the owners, their architect from home
and myself. The theme for this cottage was taken from the movie
Message-in-a-Bottle, where they took a cottage and
modified it to appear old for the movie set. We built a new
cottage to look old by using only wood for the interior.
Paneling for the partitions was installed on one side only and
horizontally. Hardwood flooring was installed early in the
construction and became distressed by leaving it unprotected and
completing construction on top of it. A very dark stain
completed the look. One other notable difference was the use of
"butt" joints for all woodwork instead of mitred joints. We
incorporated some playfull features, such as; the covered
porches of the upstairs bedrooms that have a rubber membrane,
complete with drainage system, underneath wood-slat floor
panels.
